The Defiant skill set comprises of four skills, each boosting one primary stat by seven at max level. It is a conditional boost, only active at under half HP. Defiant boosts represent the strongest single stat boost in the entire game, but come with a number of undesirable side effects. Firstly, they require the user to be under half HP. Secondly, they do not stack with Hone/Fortify or Rally buffs, which are commonly seen on many teams. The presence of these skills on the enemy team can make it hard to estimate the outcome of battles.
Defensive Defiant skills synergise well with units that already have extremely high values in those stats to begin with. Draug for instance, can reach a titanic defense of 46. While the offensive Defiant skills are often forgone in favour of Life and Death, the defensive variants (particularly Defiant Defense) have a niche in making some units extremely tanky. Reciprocal Aid and Ardent Sacrifice are two skills that can help an ally gain access to their Defiant skill.
The most obvious weakness to Defiant skills are their requirement for the unit to be under half HP. They are far less reliable than even the Blow skills thanks to them having very little control over the skill’s activation. This is compounded due to not knowing what team composition the enemy is running. For most, these skills are more hassle than they’re worth, but they can excel in the hands of a select few units.
